What is a POS cash drawer?

A cash drawer is a secure, lockable drawer used to store cash, cards, and vouchers during transactions. Most cash drawers are designed to open automatically, triggered by a connected receipt printer or POS system, rather than being opened manually for every sale. Common uses include: Food and drink order labels, kitchen preparation tickets, click & collect labels, product and price labelling, delivery packaging labels and more. They are commonly used at checkout counters, kitchens, and mobile point-of-sale setups. Depending on the model, they can also support cloud printing, mobile printing, and kitchen order routing.

Which cash drawers does Star offer?

Star's cash drawer range includes: CD4 Series – the core range, available in multiple sizes and till configurations, suited to retail, hospitality, and general POS use. CB2002 Series – a compact cash drawer range with note and coin slot configuration options. mPOP – an all-in-one device combining a receipt printer and integrated cash drawer in a single compact unit, designed for mobile and space-constrained POS setups.

What is the difference between the CD4 and CB2002 ranges?

CD4 is Star's broader, more configurable range, with multiple sizes (such as 14"x16" and 16"x16"), bill and coin slot combinations, and finishes (black or white), built for medium to higher transaction volumes. CB2002 is a more compact option, available in upright note (UN) and flat note (FN) configurations with charcoal grey finishes designed to match Star POS printers and tablet POS systems.

How does a cash drawer connect to a POS system?

Most traditional cash drawers connect through one of two methods: Printer-driven (RJ11/RJ12): the cash drawer connects directly to a compatible receipt printer using an RJ12 cable, and the printer sends the open signal, typically as part of completing a transaction. Direct/USB or peripheral hub connection: the drawer connects to a peripheral port on certain printers or devices, rather than relying solely on the RJ12 trigger. Star's CD4 and CB2002 cash drawers use the printer-driven RJ12 connection method as standard.

Can I use a cash drawer with a tablet or mobile POS system without a printer?

Yes, with the right hardware. Star's MCD10 (mC-Connect Drawer) controller adds USB, Ethernet, Wireless LAN, and Bluetooth Low Energy connectivity to a standard RJ12 cash drawer, allowing direct cash drawer control from tablets, mobile POS devices, kiosks, and modern POS systems, without needing a printer in the trigger path. Alternatively, mPOP integrates a printer and cash drawer into a single device designed for tablet-based POS.

Sizing & Configuration

What sizes do Star cash drawers come in?

CD4 drawers are commonly available in 14"x16" and 16"x16" footprints, with till configurations such as 4 bill/5 coin or 5 bill/5 coin, and some models offering 5 bill/8 coin for higher coin volumes. CB2002 drawers are available in compact configurations with note and coin slot variations to suit different cash-handling needs. The right size depends on transaction volume, the mix of cash and card payments, and available counter space.

How many bill and coin slots do I need?

This depends on the business type and how much physical cash is handled: Lower cash-volume retail or hospitality businesses with mostly card payments are usually well served by a standard 4 or 5 bill / 5 coin till. Businesses handling more cash, or needing to separate higher-denomination notes, may benefit from configurations with more coin slots (such as 5 bill/8 coin) or note holder accessories.

What does "printer driven" mean on a cash drawer spec sheet?

It means the cash drawer is opened by a signal sent from a connected, compatible receipt printer, via an RJ12 cable, rather than the drawer having its own independent trigger mechanism. This is the standard method for most traditional retail and hospitality cash drawer setups.

Security & Durability

How secure are Star cash drawers?

Star cash drawers are built with lockable mechanisms and multiple lockset options for added security. Many models, including the CD4 range, are rated for over 1 million open cycles, reflecting their build quality for daily, high-frequency use.

Can I lock a cash drawer manually?

Yes. Cash drawers typically include physical keys for manual locking and release, in addition to the automatic open signal from a connected printer or controller. Some models use a foldable, hinged key designed to reduce the risk of the key snapping off in the lock.

Compatibility

Will a Star cash drawer work with my existing receipt printer?

Compatibility depends on the printer's cash drawer port and connector type. Star's CD4 and CB2002 drawers use a standard RJ12 connection, which is compatible with most receipt printers, including non-Star printers, that support the same interface. Adapter cables are available for connecting to drawers or printers using a different connector standard.

Can I connect two cash drawers to one printer?

Yes, in many setups. Dual-drawer cables are available that allow two compatible Star cash drawers to be connected to and triggered from a single printer, useful for multi-till counters sharing one printer.

What cable do I need to connect a Star cash drawer?

Most Star cash drawers include a standard RJ12 cable in the box for connecting to a compatible printer. Additional cable types are available for dual-drawer setups, longer cable runs, or adapting drawers from other manufacturers to work with a Star printer.
