Star Moblie Printers FAQ

General Questions

What is a mobile receipt printer used for?

A mobile (or portable) receipt printer lets staff take payment and print a receipt away from a fixed checkout counter. Common uses include: Tableside ordering and payment in hospitality, line-busting at checkouts and events, delivery and field service receipts, mobile point-of-sale (mPOS) setups, and ticketing at stadiums, concessions, and events. They typically run on battery power and connect to a phone, tablet, or handheld device over Bluetooth, with some models also supporting USB or wired serial connections.

Which mobile printers does Star offer?

Star's portable printer range includes: SM-S230i – a compact 2" printer designed for lightweight, fast-paced mobile point-of-sale use such as retail, hospitality, stadiums, and events. SM-T300i – a rugged 3" printer with an IP rating, built for field service, delivery, public safety, and other demanding outdoor environments. SM-T400i – the widest model in the range at 4", an ultra-rugged printer suited to data-heavy printouts such as service reports, delivery notes, citations, and labels. Each model is designed for a different balance of size, durability, and printable width.

What is the difference between SM-S230i, SM-T300i, and SM-T400i?

The main differences are size, ruggedness, and intended use: SM-S230i is the smallest and lightest, designed for comfortable all-shift carrying in retail and hospitality. SM-T300i is rugged and water-resistant, designed for field service and outdoor use where durability matters more than compactness. SM-T400i is the widest format, with both transmissive and reflective sensors enabling label printing, suited to government, healthcare, manufacturing, retail, and logistics applications that need a larger printable area.

Battery Life & Durability

How long does the battery last on Star's mobile printers?

Battery life varies by model and usage pattern: SM-S230i offers around 13 hours of battery life for extended retail and hospitality shifts. SM-T400i offers around 35 hours of battery life when printing at five-minute intervals, suited to long field service or delivery shifts. Actual battery life depends on print frequency, print length, and environmental conditions.

Are Star mobile printers rugged or water-resistant?

Some models are specifically built for rugged use: SM-T300i and SM-T400i are designed with rubberised, durable construction. SM-T400i carries an IP54 rating for dust and splash resistance, suited to outdoor and field service environments. SM-S230i is built for everyday retail and hospitality use rather than rugged outdoor conditions.

Connectivity & Compatibility

What connectivity options do Star's mobile printers support?

Most models support Bluetooth as standard, with some offering additional options: SM-S230i supports Bluetooth and USB connectivity. SM-T300i and SM-T400i support Bluetooth and wired serial (RS-232) connectivity. All three are Apple MFi certified, meaning they pair reliably with iPad, iPhone, and iPod touch devices, in addition to Android and Windows devices.

Do Star mobile printers work with both iOS and Android?

Yes. Star's mobile printers support iOS, Android, and Windows devices, and use auto-detection Bluetooth pairing so staff can switch between device types without manual reconfiguration.

Can I print from a web-based application on a mobile device?

Yes, on supported models. Star's WebPRNT Browser configuration allows a mobile printer to print receipts or data directly from a browser-based application running on a paired mobile device, without a native app integration.

Use Cases

What is the best mobile printer for retail and hospitality?

The SM-S230i is best suited to retail and hospitality use cases such as tableside ordering, line-busting, and event or stadium concessions, where a lightweight, compact printer is the priority.

What is the best mobile printer for field service or delivery?

The SM-T300i is designed for field service, delivery, and public safety use, with a rugged, water-resistant build suited to outdoor working conditions.

What is the best mobile printer for data-heavy printouts or labels?

The SM-T400i is best suited to applications needing a wider printable area or label printing capability, such as detailed service reports, delivery notes, citations, and labelling in healthcare, manufacturing, retail, or logistics settings.

Setup & Maintenance

How do I load paper into a Star mobile printer?

Star's mobile printers use a "Drop-In & Print" loading mechanism, where the printer cover opens at the touch of a button so a new roll can be dropped in without needing two hands or removing existing components.

What accessories are available for Star mobile printers?

Common accessories across the range include belt clips, shoulder straps, battery packs, single and multi-bay battery chargers, and car chargers, allowing the printer to be carried and recharged in the way that best suits the working environment.

Why is my mobile printer not connecting to my phone or tablet?

Common causes include the printer not being in pairing mode, an incorrect device selected in Bluetooth settings, low battery, or the printer being out of Bluetooth range. Restarting the printer and re-pairing the device usually resolves most connection issues.
